Freiberg Colloquium “Simply beautiful – gemstones, inclusions, phenomena”

Speaker: Dr. Jürgen Weyer

As part of this relaxed lecture, a few interesting points about gemstones/diamonds and gemstone identification are highlighted. Training in the field of gemstones is characterized by a certain joy in the beauty of the stones, but also pitfalls, fakes, syntheses and a necessary correctness when approaching the determination. The lecture, which contains many pictures and examples, can therefore be divided into four sections:

What is a gemstone - crumb shit, blurred boundaries and "aquarium gravel" Determination of gemstones - detective work, frustration and joy, sense and nonsense Problems with syntheses and treatments - DeBeers and diamonds, glass-filled or compositeInclusions and special properties - Usambara, Cat's eye, CC, just beautiful

The Freiberg Colloquium is a series of lectures by the Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology, the Saxon State Archives/Mining Archives Freiberg, the Saxon Mining Authority, the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, the Helmholtz Institute for Resource Research, terra mineralia and the Geocompetence Center Freiberg e.V.
