Excursion: Through the Tharandt Forest

On Saturday, 16 March 2019, we would like to meet the children of the "mineralinos" at 8:45 am to go on an excursion to the Tharandt forest. There we look at different rocks, like basalt, phyllite, rhyolite and ignimbrite and take samples.

Excursion data/procedure

8:45 am                  Meeting point: car park "Zigeunerplatz" (at GoogleMaps: car park at the Trie-bisch) S194 from Grillenburg to Tharandt, about 1,5 km after Grillenburg on the left side in the crossing area Hauptstraße/S194 with Mühlweg
9:00 am Start of the excursion (approx. 6 km)
01:00 pm End of the event, drive home

For the excursion your child needs the following things:

- Catering and above all drinks
- firm, comfortable shoes, optimal ankle high with socks
- mud trousers or long trousers that can get dirty
- warm, weatherproof jacket
- (Working) gloves
- change of clothes
- small hammer, chisel and safety goggles
- Brush for cleaning the finds
- packaging material, such as old newspapers or cellulose
- Paper and pen to label the finds
- Bag/basket

Without these things your child is not allowed to participate in the excursion. The excursion will be led by the mineralinos' supervisors, Michael Gäbelein (mineralogist) and Paul Stammwitz (student of geotechnics and mining). Both are passionate mineral collectors. They are supported by me.

Since the journey has to be made by private car, we would be happy if you as a parent/driver participate in the excursion and help your child. Since there are only limited parking spaces available locally, which we share with other forest visitors, we encourage the formation of car pools. Please inform your child that he/she must follow the instructions of the carers exactly.

The number of participants is limited to 20 children. Participation is free of charge. Please register your child by Thursday, 14 March 2019 at the terra mineralia information desk (03731 394654 or fuehrungen@terra-mineralia.de). Please leave your telephone number and e-mail address so that we can contact you in case of bad weather. Many thanks in advance.

With a friendly Glück auf!

Visit of a real mineral collector

On Monday, June 3rd, the girls and boys from the children's club "mineralinos" visit a real mineral collector. He will show minerals from his collection and tell when he found his first mineral.

The collector, a member of the Freiberger Mineralienfreunde e.V. association, tells the mineralinos how he built up his collection. This also includes specializing in a certain field of collecting. In addition the collector shows also naturally also made pictures of his excursions. Thus the children experience, which advantages and disadvantages it has to collect minerals from the homeland or far countries. Another question will be whether collecting minerals is just a hobby or whether you can even make it your profession later on? Also here the collector can tell the children a lot. The supervisors are naturally curious how many other questions the girls and boys will have to the collector.

The mineralinos meet at 15:30 at the terra mineralia cash desk in Freudenstein Castle. Further information gives the Infotheke 03731 394654 or by E-Mail under fuehrungen@terra-mineralia.de. The participation is free of charge.
