Special exhibition on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of terra mineralia
On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the collector Dr. Dr. h. c. Erika Pohl-Ströher and the 10th birthday of terra mineralia, a special exhibition of minerals discovered for the first time in Saxony - the home of Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher - will be presented. From the today more than 5 000 minerals known worldwide were discovered almost 100 in Saxony, especially in the Erzgebirge.
From the mineralogical collections of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the Senckenberg Naturhistorische Sammlungen Dresden a total of 160 minerals are shown, ranging from chlorargyrite and bismuth from the 16th century to Rietveldit from 2017. A highlight of the exhibition is the "discovery of the century" from Schneeberg in 1871, during which five new minerals were discovered.
The exhibition also answers the question of how minerals get their often unusual names, as the scientists have been inspired by a wide variety of sources: the sites of discovery, special properties, chemistry or important personalities. Did you know, for example, that the minerals free life and even bunsenite were named after famous Saxon personalities? Or that the Schörl, a black tourmaline, was named after the town of Zschorlau? In the exhibition the exciting stories of the discoverers and discoveries awaken to new life.
